Understanding BMI — What It Tells You and What It Misses
allfreecalculators.in guide · Updated July 2026
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number based on your height and weight. It is useful for population trends and a rough personal check, but it is not a diagnosis.
How BMI is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9. Try your own numbers in the BMI calculator.
Standard ranges (adults)
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5–24.9 — normal
- 25–29.9 — overweight
- 30+ — obese
Where BMI falls short
BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so athletes may read as "overweight". It also ignores fat distribution, age, sex and ethnicity. Waist circumference and body-fat percentage add useful context.
Better together
Use BMI as one signal alongside waist measurement, activity level and how you feel. For medical decisions, consult a professional.
